Before Installing Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12

  • Critical: Make sure that your system date and time are set correctly.
  • Close all applications, including all virus detection programs and applications that are open in the system tray or on the Windows taskbar. Not doing so may increase the installation time and interfere with installation.
  • On Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you should be logged in as an administrator or as a user with administrative rights.
  • Make sure that you have 700 MB of free disk space available on the drive where you want to install the application.
  • To avoid file and memory conflicts, close all running programs, and delete the contents of your system's TEMP folders: [C:\Documents and Settings\<Administrator>\Local Settings\Temp] and [C:\<WINNT>\Temp].
  • Corel recommends that you install Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 in its own directory to avoid conflicts with previous versions.

Product Activation

A product activation feature is included in Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12. This feature is evident when the application is initially run, at which point a dialog box asks you whether you want to activate the product now or later. Once the product is successfully activated, the prompt does not appear again. Otherwise, the same product activation prompt appears on each subsequent application launch. You can activate the product either online or by phone. For a list of Corel Customer Service phone numbers worldwide, refer to the Corel Customer Support Services page (customerservice.html) available in the Documentation folder in the root of the CD. No personal information is required to activate the product.

Users with dial-up Internet connections encountering problems with online activation should ensure that the Internet connection is active during attempts to activate the product online.

NOTE: After a 30-day pre activation period, you are required to activate the product to be able to use it.

IMPORTANT: Windows 2000/XP users should be logged in as administrators or as users with administrative rights when launching the application for the first time after installation, or when activating the product.

Documentation

  • The user guides are in PDF format and are included on the CD in the {Language}\Documentation folder (for example, the English\Documentation folder). Adobe Reader is required for viewing them and is available for download from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
  • In Microsoft HTML Help, all pop-ups are, by default, proportionally centered on the hyperlinks. However, if a hyperlink is along the right side of the Help window and the Help window is maximized or right-aligned, the right part of the pop-up text is out of view. If you want to view the full text of pop-ups, avoid maximizing the Help window or positioning it along the right side of the screen.

Corel DESIGNER 12

Workspace

Periodically, it may be necessary to restore the application’s workspace to the default settings. To do this, hold down F8, and start the application. A dialog box appears, asking if you want to overwrite the current workspace with the factory default. Click Yes. The application starts using the default settings for the currently selected workspace. Note that you will lose any workspace customization. See the Help for information about creating, using, and customizing multiple workspaces.

Application Presets

Application presets are saved to your user profile folder. In some cases, your user profile folder is hidden from view in Windows Explorer. If presets are hidden, you can display them by doing the following:

  1. Double-click My computer on the desktop, or launch Windows Explorer.
  2. Click Tools > Folder options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Enable the Show hidden files and folders option.

Web Features

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or a later version is required to use the Web features of Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12.

Text, Fonts, and Globalization

  • For multilingual support in Windows 2000, do the following: From the Control Panel, double-click Regional options. Click the General tab, and click Set default. This changes the system code page. Then, install the appropriate keyboard or input method editor (IME).
  • For multilingual support in Windows XP, do the following with an administrator account: From the Control Panel, click Date, time, language, and regional options. Click Regional and language options. Click the Advanced tab. In the Language for non-Unicode programs area, choose a language from the list box. Then, install the appropriate keyboard or IME.
  • Changing the Writing Tool language to a language for which there is currently no keyboard installed may install the required language keyboard.
  • To change the code page of selected text and selected text objects, click Text > Encode.
  • Some text formatting codes were unsupported in previous versions; therefore, they are converted to normal characters when the file is saved to a previous version. Some codes, most notably column/frame breaks, are removed when the file is saved to a previous version, which can cause the text flow to be altered. When saving files with these codes to previous versions, it is recommended that you convert the text to curves to preserve the flow of the text.

File I/O

  • When files are saved back to previous versions of Corel DESIGNER or CorelDRAW file formats, hatch fills are converted to full-color pattern fills.
  • When files are saved back to previous versions of Corel DESIGNER or CorelDRAW file formats, enhanced line styles are not maintained.

Scrapbook

If Corel DESIGNER 12 is installed on a system that also has Corel DESIGNER Professional SG, Corel DESIGNER 10, CorelDRAW 12, or CorelDRAW 11 installed, the search capability in the earlier versions will be affected. After you complete a search in a previous version, a blank list is generated in the Results window. To avoid this, you can modify the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\COREL\CorelSearch\CorelDESIGNER 12

Modify the registry key from a dynamic value to the absolute language ID you want to use (for example, if searching in English, the modification is to change the path from ..\Languages\<LANG>\Programs\Search.idx to ..\Languages\EN\Programs\Search.idx).

New Feature for the Scrapbook

Corel DESIGNER 12 now lets you copy your content from the CD to another location and continue using the Scrapbook features. To make use of this new feature, do the following:

  1. In the location of your choice, create a folder that has the same name as the volume label of the content CD (for example, for the Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 Clipart CD, you would require a folder called "CDTS12_CLPART").
  2. Copy the entire contents of that CD, including the volinfo.txt file, into this folder.
  3. In the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Corel\Media\Corel DESIGNER 12 Clipart (Disk1), change the path to the location of the folder you created in step #1.
You can now browse and perform searches on your clipart without having to use the content CDs.

Corel PHOTO-PAINT 12

Macros

Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 includes additional GMS files. For more information, please see the "Sample macros" section in the VBA Help for Corel DESIGNER 12.

Using Macros from CorelDRAW or Corel DESIGNER 10 in Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12

A macro written for CorelDRAW or Corel DESIGNER 10 may also work in Corel DESIGNER 12. If a macro does work, you may still need to change the name of the class, method, or property, or you may have to change parameters for the macro. For more information, see the Corel DESIGNER 12 object model in the VBA Help for Corel DESIGNER 12.

To Use Add-ins in a Windows XP Limited User Account

Follow the steps below to use add-ins in a Limited User account:

Trial, Academic, and OEM Versions

Not all components are available in our trial, Academic, and OEM versions. Unavailable components may include Corel applications, features, and third-party utilities. However, the applications and documentation may still refer to some of these components. A slightly longer launch time may be noticed in the trial versions because of the need for security checking.

Technical Support

Technical support is not available for OEM, "white box," jewel case (CD only), trial, or Academic versions of Corel products. For more information, please visit www.corel.com/support.

Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 Service Pack 1

Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite 12 Service Pack 1 offers enhancements in the following areas:

Filters

  • CGM filter improvements include support for CGM Grexchange 2.6 when exporting and importing CGM files.
  • The import filters for the DRW and DSF file formats have been enhanced.
  • The SVG import and export filters include a number of improvements.
  • The Publish to PDF feature has been enhanced.

ATA TIFF export

  • ATA TIFF support is enabled if you have the following section added to the FiltMan.ini file:
    [TIFF_Filter]
    ATA_TIFF_Support=1
  • The FiltMan.ini file is created in the user's workspace folder. If you cannot locate the file, please create an empty one. The .ini file is workspace-specific and application-specific. This means that you need to modify the .ini files for all workspaces that you use with each application. For example, for the default workspaces in Corel DESIGNER and Corel PHOTO-PAINT, you need to modify the .ini files in the following folders:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<USER_NAME>\Application Data\Corel\CorelDESIGNER12\User Workspace\Corel PHOTO-PAINT\_default

    C:\Documents and Settings\<USER_NAME>\Application Data\Corel\CorelDESIGNER12\User Workspace\CorelDESIGNER\_default
  • The ATA export feature is activated when you are exporting 1-bit black-and-white image to the TIFF file format with compression set to CCITT4 provided you have already modified the FiltMan.ini file (see the first item in the bulleted list).

Importing DXF\DWG files: In a few cases that require font substitution, text objects may not appear. Manually increasing the size of the text box will force the text to display

Other enhancements

  • Snapping enhancements include improvements to snapping text to the baseline of paragraph text and snapping to grid.
  • You can now select multiple objects within the same group.
  • You can now perform full editing within groups and nested groups.
  • Increment callouts have been enhanced.
  • Improved node handling
  • Refresh issues with applying graphic and text styles have been addressed.
  • OLE improvements
  • Printing improvements
  • VBA enhancements
